My cat steals socks all the time and brings them up from my room in the basement. Never while I'm at home. And never dirty ones. Only the ones that are clean and folded on each other. I come home from work and find 2 or 3 pairs of socks around the living room.
He's a brat!

If your cat is going insane, then mine's been there for years. Finally an explanation! J/K, actually I find it totally adorable.
Snickers (14 y.o. MALE) will carry around his 'catnip sock' and/or other stolen socks from the laundry basket, crying and carrying on like someone just died. He sounds SO pitiful!!! It's just a high-pitched trilling singsong, but it sounds so mournful.
He does it cuz he's in love with the sock, and I think it is his way of showing the other cats it is HIS (he also drools a ton on the sock so it smells like him...)

more likely she thinks its prey and she is crying to alert you that she has dinner ready!

Jeanie Loves sucks, She goes nuts when you throw one at her. She bites it, flys down hall with it and if you chase her she thinks its got to be the greatest game in the world. When chucky was a kitten he started pretty early steeling socks from the laundry when i was folding cloths. Then it grew to larger items like sweat pants. Now that is a site I tell you. A tiny kitty taking off with a leg in one mouth and another one dragging behind
and he would grawl if you tryed to take it. Just like jeanie does with the socks now.

Oh yeah, Silas steals sweaters too! In the winter he'll drag them all the way up my wrought iron spiral staircase to the living room!

Billy, my male, will carry his favorite toy around like that and meow. I don't think it's anything to worry about. She probably just discovered a new toy!

My cat does that all the time. She's one now, and always goes into my moms room and takes socks. She then brings them into my room. I once woke up and found about 5 pairs of socks on the floor..

My cat Much will drag sweaters, shirts, anything she can get a hold of (even pulling it folded out of a laundry basket) to the landing in front of the front door. Some days it is kind of sad when I come home and find something caught on the corner of a door or the stair post and know that she must have had a terrible time trying to get it to the landing.
Most of the time I have to glance at the landing before I open the front door. Never quite know what she might have found and dragged.

My parent's cat, Casha, whom we got when I was about 7, still does that. She's getting on in years now, obviously, but she still carries around balled up sockes and slippers. She does it at night, usually in the wee hours of the morning, and moans pitifully when she does it. But she'll knock it off if you take the sock away. Anyway, the vet said it was a hunting behaviour, but I think it's a maternal thing. She never had her own kittens. Plus, I lived there last summer, and I got Sammy. He was 10 wks old when he came home and we stayed there for a couple months, until I went back to school. And Casha didn't do the sock/slipper thing AT ALL while Sammy was living there. Seems persuasive to me.

The act of carrying around something that size and shape (think dead bird) and crying that special cry that you only hear at that time...well, that's pride. Your kitty thinks she's killed something really special, and she's letting you know.
Another thing to be happy about, aside from the fact that it isn't a real bird, is that a cat leaves around the things they've "killed" as a present to their owner(s). Anyone here with an outdoor (or semi-outdoor) cat experience a lovely dead something being left on their front porch? That's your kitty saying "hey, thanks...this one's for you". )
A note about the fact that mollydoats' cat only does this with clean socks...hey, pretty healthy that she doesn't want to kill something that stinks. Heehee!!

Billy isn't outdoor at all, but if a lizard or moth or bug crawls in through the door, he catches it, and if he doesn't eat it, he brings it straight to me.

I love it when my kitties carry things in their mouths.
